On Thursday 5 September, I had the pleasure of accompanying Max Klitscher (Year 12) and Tarni McCosker (Year 10) to the State Library of Queensland as two of the ten shortlisted nominees in the state for the Brisbane Writers Festival microfiction competition.

Microfiction requires brevity: for this competition, authors had to have a complete narrative (orientation, middle and end) in response to a topic in 120 words or less. This is often a larger challenge than writing a longer story, especially when trying to demonstrate versatile vocabulary, style and flair.

For OC to have two students shortlisted is a testament to our staff, students and their parents and the work they all do on a daily basis to foster a love of reading, words and language.

All shortlisted nominees read their stories on stage. Max and Tarni were entertaining, poised and polished. Max's delivery of his story "How to survive an apocalypse: the definitive guide" was outstanding and would not have been out of place on stage with Rowan Atkinson.

Congratulations must go to Tarni, whose story "The secret life of an author" not only received first place, but a $1,000 prize!
